What Is Cellulitis, and How To Prevent It Today

Protection From Infection

The importance of proper skin maintenance extends beyond just the aesthetic. This is because poor hygiene can lead to many skin problems and infections, most notably cellulitis.

Cellulitis is a serious skin infection that’s caused when bacteria gets into open wounds or dry and cracked skin.

Though cellulitis is potentially deadly, there are steps you can take today to prevent this dangerous skin infection from hurting you and the ones you love.

In this blog we discuss what cellulitis is, how to know if you have it, and ways to prevent it today!

What Is Cellulitis

Staph Bacteria (Source: CDC and Prevention ID#: 6486)

Cellulitis is a deep skin infection that occurs when bacteria gets into cracks and breaks in your skin, causing pain, swelling, and potentially hazardous health complications.

The most common bacteria that causes cellulitis are strep and staph bacteria. These bacteria are found on everyday people you come in contact with, mostly near their nose or mouth. (1)

Though cellulitis is preventable and common, once someone has contracted it, it needs to be addressed immediately because of its danger and potentially fatal side effects. (2)

QUICK TIP: There are more than 14.5 million cases of preventable cellulitis in the United States every year. (3)

Cellulitis affects adults AND children. It most commonly appears on adults around their legs, and most commonly affects children by their face or neck.

It's important to remember that there are several types of cellulitis, though, and symptoms can appear anywhere on your body. (4)

Those with pre-existing conditions, dry and flaky skin, and weak immune systems are more prone to catching cellulitis, so get some sleep and boost your immune system today! (5)

How To Know If You Have It

Even though cellulitis is an internal bacterial infection, it is usually identified visually.

Cellulitis often appears in the form of red and swollen skin, and is usually warm to the touch. Other common symptoms include pain, blistering, tenderness, and expanding of the skin or blotches. (1) (6)

It's important to note that not all of these symptoms mean you have cellulitis, and not all cases of cellulitis feature these symptoms. It's best to consult your doctor or health care professional if you are experiencing any pain or have any questions about your health.

QUICK TIP: Those with weakened immune systems, children, and the elderly can get cellulitis without an open wound! (7)

Cellulitis can be confused with many other skin conditions and infections. One infection in particular is often confused with cellulitis. Its name is erysipelas.

Erysipelas is a skin infection also caused by bacteria entering open wounds and cuts. The main difference between the two is that cellulitis affects the deeper tissue under your skin, and erysipelas affects the upper layers of skin. Both are dangerous, and both need to be addressed immediately by a health care professional. (8)

Dermatitis is another common skin problem that can be confused with cellulitis, but dermatitis isn’t caused by bacteria, and isn't as dangerous. Dermatitis can be easily remedied with daily CLEANSING and MOISTURIZING with ALL-NATURAL skincare products.

Remedies

Aside from antibiotics, there is not much you can do once you have cellulitis. This is because your body needs a little help to get rid of those nasty bacteria wreaking havoc under the surface of your skin. (10)

You should act fast if you suspect you may have cellulitis. This is because cellulitis quickly spreads throughout your body, affecting your lymph nodes, blood, heart, bones, and nervous system. (1)

Most forms of cellulitis are not contagious, but proper care and attention still need to be taken to prevent germs from passing one person to another. (10)

Quick Tip: Not everyone will get cellulitis if they have an open wound or cut. Your body tries to fight the bacteria first, and many times wins!  (3)

Even though its symptoms are painful and dangerous, people with cellulitis recover pretty quickly after antibiotics, with symptoms disappearing after just a few days of therapy. (11)

Sometimes surgery is required if your cellulitis has worsened without treatment, and many times you actually need to be drained of excess fluid in your affected body part to help alleviate a potential abscess. (6)

Having cellulitis once means you're more likely to get it again, so it's best to take the necessary steps to preventing it now so you can live carefree with smooth skin that's glowing and healthy all fall long! (4)

Prevention

Cellulitis can worsen in the fall, when dryness can cause cracks, blisters, and open wounds on your skin. These cracks can allow bacteria to creep their way in and cause cellulitis.

So what can you do to prevent it?

Other than cleaning your hands, covering open wounds, and using common sense when around others, it's important that you practice good hygiene this fall as the temperature drops. (1)
