The Impact of Weather on Your Skin

Seasons Change ... Your Skin Shouldn't!

Falling Leaves … Pumpkins… Apple Cider …

Dry Skin … Allergies … and Dermatitis?

Not only does fall bring shorter days and cool temperatures, it brings many seasonal changes to your skin, too.

But don’t worry.

There are plenty of things you can do today to prepare yourself for the coming season.

In this blog we talk about the ways fall affects your skin, and how you can keep your skin glowing and radiant all season long with fall skincare tips!

FALLING TEMPERATURES

Source: Condair

Fall brings cooler temperatures, and cooler air dries out your skin.

Cold air doesn't hold moisture like warmer air does, which makes us more prone to eczema, dermatitis, and open wounds. (1)

Additionally, lower levels of humidity cause skin problems. This is because low humidity means a drying out of your natural oil, leaving your skin dehydrated, dry, and flaky. (2)

FUN FACT: The top layer of your skin consists of your natural oil, which traps moisture. Fall strips you of your natural oils, which which is why your skin gets dry in the fall. (3)

Cooler air also means more artificial heating. Indoor heating creates a dry environment around you, which leaves your skin in need of additional hydration. (4)

Then, when you step outside, your skin is just as susceptible to new, cooler temperatures that can fluctuate up to thirty or forty degrees at night.

These changes in temperature can shock your system, and can cause acne, dermatitis, and other skin conditions closely related to the weather. (5)

SKIN FLAREUPS

Many people think that acne and other skin conditions come during the hot and sweaty months of June, July, and August. Though this is true, the cooler temperatures of fall can make your current skin problems worse.

Fall often leads to a stripping of natural moisture and oil, and a pH balance over 5.5.

This uneven pH balance can also lead to premature aging and poor cellular turnover, an essential element of skin maintenance. (7)

FUN FACT: Despite cooler temperatures, avoid hot showers! They only dry you out more, and leave your skin even more dehydrated! (8)

Another type of skin condition similar to acne, called keratosis pilaris, which usually shows itself in the form of patchy blotches or acne-like bumps, is common during fall. (9)

Keratosis pilaris can be itchy. This may worsen current skin problems and lead to skin that feels like sandpaper, which continues to intensify during the cooler months. (10)

For many people, the fall is also a time where their eczema and psoriasis return. These inflammatory diseases are further irritated by the lower humidity levels associated with fall and cooler temperatures. (11)

LESS SUN ...?

Many people think that once the summer is over, the temperature drops and they can forget all about the sun. But this isn't true.

UV rays penetrate clouds, fall, fog, and cold.

It's as simple as that.

UVA radiation exists year round, even in winter, and its effects don't change much from the summer. (12)

UV rays also reflect off of other surfaces, meaning that as soon as you step outside, you're getting hit in all directions by the sun's rays. (13)

FUN FACT: Many people enjoy climbing and hiking during the fall, but be careful - the higher altitude you are, the more harsh the UV rays are! (14)

The sun alters the texture, elasticity, and smoothness of your skin, and can also lead to blotches, roughness, and premature aging. (15)

UV rays also impact your skin's ability to defend itself, weakening your immune system and leaving you susceptible to skin cancer and other bacterial infections. (16)

CELLULAR TURNOVER

The falling temperatures of autumn can shock your skin, which leads to decreased cellular turnover.

With slower cellular turnover, the natural ability your skin has to cleanse itself and replace old and dying skin cells is damaged. (17)

Skin then becomes aged, and its natural texture changes due to the buildup of dead skin cells. (18)

FUN FACT: Every 28-40 days, a new skin cell is born in the deepest layer of your epidermis. Fall makes it hard for these cells to come to your surface and show off! (19)

Slower cellular turnover is linked to dryness because you need to have elastic and vital skin in order to recycle your old and dying cells.

Therefore, the skin problems of fall compound, leading to even dryer skin and a buildup of dead skin cells. (20)

LOSS OF MINERALS

The arrival of fall means skin receives less and less vitamins and minerals, especially Vitamin D. (21)

Loss of Vitamin D can cause your immune system to weaken, which can lead to bacterial infections and heart disease. (22)

FUN FACT: Vitamin D is actually made IN our skin because of the sun. It's important to take care of your skin so it can convert sunlight into essential Vitamin D.

As in the case of cellular turnover, dry skin can worsen in the fall because many people then become Vitamin A deficient. (24)

A deficiency in Vitamin A makes dry skin worse, and can lead to bumpiness, rough patches, and scales on the hair, scalp, and skin. (25)
